SYNOPSIS:
Spiral, the new chapter from the book of
Saw.
Spiral‘s concept is interesting and could have reinvigorated excitement for the long stale
Saw franchise now up to nine installments. Darren Lynn Bousman (who has actually directed a couple of the better entries in the series) has kept up the mechanical and gory traps of the twisted game while framing a story around a police force hunting down a copycat Jigsaw. Perhaps even more refreshing, Chris Rock is lead detective Zeke Banks, bringing both a comedic presence and sincere effort as the disliked honest cop (you can sense that he really does have a passion for the franchise and is doing all he can to make this work somehow). Let’s give credit where credit is due: Darren Lynn Bousman’s “Spiral: From the Book of Saw” avoids the obvious deathtrap of wallowing in nostalgia for the blockbuster “Saw” franchise, which produced seven hit movies in its first seven years but only one other sequel in the last decade.
Instead, “Spiral” wallows in nostalgia for the crime thrillers of the 1990s, stuffing itself to the gills with distracting references to “Pulp Fiction” and constantly evoking not-altogether-unpleasant memories of films like “Se7en,” “Copycat” and “The Bone Collector.”
3.0 out of 5 star rating
One of the first films to venture bravely into reopened cinemas, Spiral: From the Book of Saw sees Chris Rock entering the twisted games of this long-running horror franchise (albeit with more of a thriller-like tone this time around).

The comedian and actor is a long-time fan of the Saw series, and the script for Spiral is based on a story that Rock created himself. This is something of a passion project then, and you can feel that love for the material slicing through every scene. Although there is a new mystery to unravel (a new killer, a new MO, and even a new puppet), there are plenty of knowing nods to entertain the Saw faithful.
