The Santa Fe National Forest is reminding those enjoying the outdoors to make sure to properly extinguish any campfires.
The 2021 wildfire season is approaching and the SFNF is experiencing severe drought conditions and high fire danger.
Over Mother’s Day weekend, fire prevention patrols in the Jemez Ranger District found 18 abandoned campfires. The Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District found an estimated 10 abandoned campfires reported over the last 10 days.
Most of the abandoned campfires – the leading human cause of wildfire – were found at dispersed campsites.
The Jemez patrols are also reporting several of the campfires found were not still-smoldering ash, but actually flaming, burning logs which no one had even attempted to extinguish.

SFNF May Implement Rowe Mesa Prescribed Burn Tuesday
SFNF News:
SANTA FE If conditions remain favorable, fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) may begin implementation of the previously announced East Rowe Mesa prescribed burn on the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District as early as Tuesday, March 2.
The decision to proceed will depend on multiple factors, including resource availability, fuel moisture levels, air quality, ventilation, and forecasted weather and winds. During the COVID-19 pandemic, fire managers consider smoke impacts to communities before making a final decision to implement a prescribed fire.
The plan for Tuesday is to burn 110 acres of slash within the larger 4,455-acre East Rowe Mesa treatment unit located east of NM State Road 34 approximately 10 miles south of the village of Pecos.

The Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District hopes to complete the La Cueva and Rowe Mesa prescribed burns to reduce the risk of wildfire by Jan. 31. Each prescribed burn is designed to meet specific objectives and will be managed with firefighter and public safety as the first priority.
