ENGAGEMENTS BY Chidi Amuta
Nigeria enters the new year draped in curious contradiction. A protracted sixtieth anniversary celebration has recently been interrupted by an untidy debate about the nation’s very survival as a viable state. The question is simple: Is the Nigerian state failing?
Among most enlightened Nigerians, there is now an inconvenient consensus that the Nigerian state is in a free fall. Subscribers to the failing state submission concede that Nigeria may not have failed completely but that the state is in desperate disrepair. We are witnessing what we may call a ‘failed state debate’ which has now fanned out into two flanks. Majority of sensible citizens are warning that the general insecurity and severe widespread poverty in the nation indicate a free descent into a possible state failure.
Bishop Matthew Kukah
By Reverend Dr. Gideon Para-Mallam, a Global Mission Leader, Social Justice and Peace Advocate, President & CEO, The Para-Mallam Peace Foundation
FOR more than 44 years that Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah has served as a Priest, till date, this would be the first time his Christmas homily has been so widely read and talked about nationwide, perhaps globally, thanks or no thanks to social media.
For all practical purposes, the Nigerian Presidency gave oxygen to Kukah’s homily! If I were Bishop Kukah, I would say, ‘thanks Mr. President for the publicity you have given to my homily in this remarkable unforgettable year 2020.’

Olusegun Bamgbose, a chieftain of the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, has described the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari as almost dead and warned against vilifying Bishop Matthew Kukah.
Bishop Kukah of the Sokoto Archdiocese of the Catholic Church, had in his Christmas message to Nigerians, raised a lot of concerns about the President Muhammadu Buhari government.
And his statement has since generated a lot of controversies, contributions, and crisis with the Presidency reacting sharply against what Bamgbose described as historic and heroic address.
According to the 2023 presidential hopeful, there comes a time when the government should be confronted with nothing but the bitter truth.

THE Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, has denied calling for a coup.
Kukah at a media conference with some journalists at St. Bakhita Secretariat in Sokoto on Monday, urged Nigerians to get the accurate statement rather than relying on lies being peddled about in his name.
The renowned in his Christmas message, titled, ‘A nation in search of vindication’, accused President Buhari of deliberately sacrificing the dreams of Nigerians to institutionalise northern hegemony.
The message drew the ire of the Presidency, Muslim Rights Concern as well as the Coalition of Northern Groups.
But Kukah said his message was based on his love for the country and had no political or ulterior motive.
