Five Vermont parishes will be without priests for at least a year because the Diocese of Burlington was caught off guard by the extended wait times currently plaguing applications for green cards.
Four international priests serving the Diocese three from the Philippines and one from Nigeria will have to return to their countries, as their religious worker visas will expire before their applications for green card status can be completed. In addition, normal retirements and transfers mean the Diocese will lose a total of six active priests in July.
Two of the four priests affected are Rev. Rogelio Organiza and Rev. Avelino Vale, according to Ellen Kane, spokeswoman for the Diocese. Kane declined to share the names of the other two priests, saying they were still letting their communities know about what has happened.
