A PROFESSIONAL photographer has been snapping pictures as a social tribute to his beloved hometown. John Alderson has been capturing Bishop Auckland in its most raw and authentic state, from bin-filled alleyways to nostalgic spots in the town centre. The 54-year-old, who usually specialises in weddings, said that his project has gained a massive amount of interest in the town. The photographer, who also teaches photography at Bishop Auckland College, said: “Being born and bred in Bishop Auckland I have an affinity with the place, its history, and its people. “As a photographer I set myself a massive challenge at the end of February 2020 to photograph every street, alleyway, building of note, nook and cranny, cutting and park within Bishop Auckland.
A GROUP of students have given up their Easter break to give back to the community, and earn vital experience. Painting and decorating students from Bishop Auckland College have given up their free time to help give Stanhope Community Hall a new look. The hall had been in need of a fresh coat of paint, but the church struggled to find the time and the funding to facilitate it. The hall has many uses including a food bank, toddlers’ group, and polling station. The group of students work with Trades4care, a local Community Interest Company and have worked on many projects before including Raby Castle.
Woodhouse Leisure Complex Picture: SARAH CALDECOTT A PROPOSAL to close a town leisure centre in favour a new state-of-the art facility faces opposition from residents and gym users. Durham County Council s proposal for Bishop Auckland is part of a £78m leisure transformation across the county – including new facilities at Chester-le-Street and Seaham – which it says will have health, social and economic benefits. But almost 300 people have signed an online petition against the closure of Woodhouse Close Leisure Centre, in favour of a new facility next to Bishop Auckland Football Club’s ground, at Tindale Crescent. Officers considered revamping the Woodhouse facility, which is 53 years old; relocation to Bishop Auckland College or even a dual site.
THE Prime Minister is preparing to confirm that the re-opening of schools will take place on March 8 after three months of missed classes for the vast majority of pupils. I’m sure millions of parents will be breathing a sigh of relief because home-schooling can’t be easy, and good teachers are worth their weight in gold. But let’s keep all the scaremongering over the damage that’s allegedly been done to children’s prospects in perspective. Children go to school and college for 13 years. Missing one year – even if they’d had no teaching at all – represents less than eight per cent of their education. And for at least half of those youngsters, examination grades will be irrelevant anyway.
