Nationals sign Blake Swihart to minor league deal with spring training invite

Catcher is now the biggest question mark for the Washington Nationals, who have otherwise added a first baseman, a left fielder, a starter and two left-handed relievers this winter. They are bringing back 33-year-old Yan Gomes for the end of his contract. The one other catcher on the 40-man roster is Tres Barrera. They ll need to address this, now or later, but have padded their spring training depth with two minor league deals.
The first was for veteran catcher Welington Castillo, who signed back with the Nationals in December. The second was for Blake Swihart, who received a contract and invite to spring training Monday, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement. “We have a number of outfielders who are all good enough athletes to play center field,” Bloom said Dec. 14. “But we still have room to augment that with a center fielder or with a corner outfielder.”
But as the roster stands right now, Bloom said Verdugo, Andrew Benintendi and Hunter Renfroe all are capable of playing center field and Verdugo is the most suited.
