A fire at a scrapyard on Indianapolis south side sent a large plume of black smoke billowing into the air Monday afternoon and led fire officials to ask nearby residents to keep their windows shut.
The Indianapolis Fire Department worked to extinguish the flames in the 2000 block of Bluff Road near South Meridian and West Raymond streets. The blaze continued into the night.
The fire broke out about 5 p.m. on a 30-foot-tall scrap metal pile at Saul Goode Industries, according to a tweet from the fire department. The tweet described the massive pile as 100 yards wide by 100 yards long. It said no employees were on site when the fire began.
