Man killed after pointing gun at St Clair County deputy

From The Tribune staff reports CROPWELL, Ala. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly shooting involving a St. Clair County deputy. Kevin Darion Wells, 56, of Cropwell was killed on Monday, Jan. 18, 2021. The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office said the incident happened when a deputy was responding to a domestic altercation at 490 Pepper Road, in Cropwell. The deputy said when he encountered Wells, he noticed he had a handgun. “After yelling numerous times for the subject to drop the weapon, the subject raised and pointed his weapon at the deputy, Sheriff Billy Murray said in a press release. “The deputy then fired his weapon striking and killing the subject.”

Authorities were dispatched at 10:05 p.m. to a physical domestic altercation at 490 Pepper Road in Cropwell, St. Clair County Sheriff Billy Murray said Tuesday. When officers arrived at the location, they encountered a man who was brandishing a handgun. The deputies repeatedly ordered the man to drop the weapon but instead, the sheriff said, the man pointed his gun at a deputy. The deputy then fired his weapon and struck the man. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
