The Olympic myth: why the Games fail to get people fit
The Games promised to inspire a generation. Nine years later, obesity is rising and we re exercising less than before
26 July 2021 • 5:00am The legacy of the Games was meant to centre on more than bricks, mortar and wildflower meadows. It was meant to have had a lasting effect on our waistline and blood pressure
Over the next fortnight we are about to be inspired. We will see Dina Asher-Smith hurtle across the Tokyo athletics track, Adam Peaty plough through the water in the Olympic pool, Laura Kenny fly round the velodrome and immediately we will pull on our trainers, slip into our swim gear, climb aboard our bikes and get out there. Sport here we come. The nation is about to get fit.
