SFI pilot: Farmers will be paid for simply meeting the law

© Tim Scrivener Efforts to move agricultural support in a more sustainable direction appear to be faltering, say conservation groups, with farmers set to be paid for what are already regulatory requirements. Commenting on Defra’s new Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) pilot scheme – details of which were released yesterday – Ellie Brodie, Wildlife Trusts head of land management, said the government appeared to be losing its environmental ambition. “We will be looking extremely closely at the standards, but at worst it appears that some could pay for what is already included in regulation, such as watercourse buffering,” she said. “Paying some farmers to do what all are required to do by law, or for parts of cross-compliance, does not provide value for taxpayer money.”

NSA makes difficult decision to postpone major events

THE NSA has made the difficult decision to postpone its major regional events for this year. Despite the promise of an ease of lockdown and the ultimate removal of Covid-19 restrictions as 2021 progresses, NSA regional event organising committees are unanimous in their decision to postpone this year’s events. One of the main events to be affected is the postponement of NSA North Sheep due to have been held on Wednesday, June 2. A new date has been scheduled for Wednesday, June 7, 2023 in Northumberland. Other key events include NSA Welsh Sheep, due to be held on Tuesday, May 18; NSA Sheep South West on Tuesday, June 22; and NSA Sheep Northern Ireland on Tuesday, July 6. The organising committee of NSA Scot Sheep, an event that was also due to be held in 2021, made the decision to postpone earlier this year.
