Master musician and educator Ron Carter, often credited as jazz s most recorded bassist, and author Kevin Whitehead, long-running jazz critic on Fresh Air with Terry Gross, have won Lifetime Achievement Awards in the 2021 Jazz Journalists Association Jazz Awards, announced today.
As trending in the greater jazz community, creative women earned significant recognition: Composer-orchestra leader Maria Schneider, whose album Data Lords (ArtistShare) is Record of the Year, and drummer-producer educator Terri Lyne Carrington, Jazz Musician of the Year, won multiple awards. Women prevailed in several other instrumentalists categories, too.
Saxophonist Harry Drabkin is a Berklee College of Music graduate as well as a faculty alumni where he performed in the Recording Band, Faculty Jazz Ensemble and more. His influences come from Miles, Coltrane, Cannonball and Charlie Mariano. He recently retired as Chief of Oncology at the Medical University of South Carolina and returned to Denver where he is active in our local jazz scene.
Denver jazz legend Eric Gunnison was raised in a musical family in Buffalo, NY and attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, graduating with a BA in music composition in 1979. He lives in Denver where he has been a mainstay in the music scene for 19 years. Eric has toured and recorded with the iconic jazz vocalist Carmen McRae, and trumpeter Ron Miles. In addition, he has performed in concert with Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, Phil Woods, Bobby Shew, John McNeil and Eddie Gomez. University of Wyoming Department of Music faculty members Ben Markley and Andy Wheelock will team up with bassist Bob Bowman and trumpeter Dan Jonas for a virtual performance Wednesday, April 28.
The performance will be livestreamed at 7:30 p.m. from the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts concert hall. The group will play a collection of jazz standards and originals. To view the performance, visit www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMXx6nWGL68.
Markley, a UW associate professor, is director of jazz studies and a jazz pianist. He has performed with well-known jazz musicians Brian Lynch, Eddie Henderson, Terell Stafford, George Garzone and John Fedchock. Compositions from each of Markley’s two albums earned him American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Foundation Young Jazz Composer Awards in 2007 and 2008. He co-leads the band Raincheck, which recently released a recording on the Dazzle Recordings label.
