Topsail Steamer continues to gather steam

By Jenny Callison, posted May 7, 2021 RETAIL & HOSPITALITY | TOPSAIL STEAMER DANIELLE MAHON, FOUNDER | YEAR FOUNDED: 2017 | EMPLOYEES: 25 (Photo by Terah Wilson) Inspired by her experiences of summer seafood cookouts on the Jersey Shore when she was growing up, Danielle Mahon decided to share the experience of a low country boil with folks in coastal North Carolina.   Soon after she and her family moved to the state, she developed her signature offering – seasoned, ready-to- cook seafood in a metal pot – and opened a location in Topsail Island in 2017. Since then she has opened a store in Wrightsville Beach as well as two in her native New Jersey: one in Ocean City and one in Long Island Beach.

GROWING OLD UNGRACEFULLY: The Day the Music Died

The music died early on the morning on February 3, 1959, midway through the Winter Dance Party tour whose line-up included some of the best rock and roll artists of the day. Headliner Buddy Holly had chartered a four-seater Beechcraft Bonanza to fly him from Clear Lake, Iowa to Fargo, North Dakota, taking along with him J.P Richardson (aka the “Big Bopper”) and Ritchie Valens. Bad weather, a pilot not certified for instrument flying and a new gyro contributed to the 1 a.m. crash in an Iowa cornfield, killing all on board instantly. Country Music Memories: Don Everly Is Born in Kentucky

Happy 84th birthday to Don Everly! The singer was born on Feb. 1, 1937, in the small town of Brownie, Ky. Everly was born to musical parents, Isaac and Margaret. Together with his younger brother Phil, the family formed the Everly Family band and traveled all over the South and Midwest; they also hosted their own show on a local radio station. After both brothers finished high school, they officially became a duo and caught the attention of Chet Atkins, who helped secure their first record deal, on Columbia Records. However, after the release of one single, Keep a Lovin Me, which failed to chart, they were released from their deal.

She is also one of the few to have received at least one nomination from the Academy Awards, Grammy Awards, Tony Awards, and Emmy Awards. As an actress, she starred in films such as 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Rhinestone, and Steel Magnolias. And most recently, she donated money to help develop a Coronavirus vaccine.
