IBM forges private-public collab to build digital-ready workforce in PH

IBM Philippines announced on Tuesday, Feb. 16, partnerships with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), the Department of Education (DepEd), the Analytics Association of the Philippines (AAP), and the Project Inclusion Network (PIN) to further IBM’s global education efforts to help close the digital skills gap and enhance socioeconomic development.
PBSP is partnering with IBM to create at least two P-TECH schools and expand use of Open P-TECH this year. P-TECH is a public-education model that provides high school students from underserved backgrounds with the academic, technical, and professional skills, as well as credentials needed for STEM jobs which may require more than a high school diploma but not necessarily a university degree. Taguig City University hosts the first P-TECH school in the country which opened in 2019.
At least 100 out-of-school and unemployed youth are expected to benefit from free skills training and employment opportunities after the Antipolo City government inked an agreement with YouthWorks PH on Thursday, Feb. 11.
First youth fellowship program for democracy in the Philippines opens

YouthLed Launches First Youth Fellowship Program for Democracy in the Philippines
February 4, 2021 The Asia Foundation is announcing an open call for applications for its new Youth Leadership for Democracy (YouthLed)’s 2021 Leadership and Democracy (LEAD) Fellowship. The LEAD Fellowship is the first-of-its-kind program in the Philippines empowering Filipino youth leaders to be champions of democratic values, participatory governance, and civic engagement. Applications will be accepted from February 1-28 with selections announced at the end of April.

However, given the right set of skills and a positive attitude, the Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) believes that the future is bright even to those who are not able to earn their college degrees.
“There are various loopholes and roadblocks in the education-employment pathway that prevent our youth from landing meaningful jobs,” said PBED Chairman Ramon Del Rosario.
“While more companies are now open to hiring from the K to 12 system, the playing field continues to be unfair to those without a college degree especially as they try to progress in the workplace,” he added.
