In the Heights is directed by Jon M. Chu ( Crazy Rich Asians ) and follows the stories of several people living in Washington Heights in New York City as they attempt to navigate their goals, their dreams and the expectations of those around them. The musical features hit songs including “Breathe,” “Paciencia y Fe” and “When You’re Home.
The film stars Anthony Ramos, who originated the roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in Hamilton, as Usnavi de la Vega, the role played by Miranda in the original production. Other cast members include Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera, Olga Merediz and Daphne Rubin-Vega. Miranda will also appear in the film in the form of the Piragua Guy.
In The Heights was scheduled to be released in June 2020 but the COVID-19 pandemic shook up those plans.
And Lin-Manuel Miranda revealed that he was originally against delaying the film s release a year until Jon Chu convinced him otherwise.
The 41-year-old producer and playwright Miranda and 41-year-old director appear on the cover of the latest issue of Variety.
The talented duo discussed several topics in the pages of the publication including how the film s original deal with Universal fizzled out, how a studio s desire for star power can negatively effect actors of color, and hesitation to change the film s release date.
In the Heights is expected to be the event of the summer!
Based on the 2007 Tony Award-winning stage musical of the same name by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes, the story got the big screen treatment and fans have been anxious to see the movie. Last March, In the Heights’ theatrical release was delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak, but plans are now underway to have it hit theaters and HBO Max in June.
