Sold drugs in Laois town in an effort to pay off significant debt

A man charged with drugs offences must engage 100 per cent with the Probation Services if he is to avoid a prison sentence.
Owen Foster, 27, of 8 Kilmalogue Downs, Portarlington appeared before Portlaoise District Court on Thursday last charged with possession of drugs and possession for sale or supply at Kilmalogue Lawns, Portarlington on October 25, 2020.
Sgt JJ Kirby told the court that Mr Foster had been found with ten small bags with a white substance in them.
It was cocaine with a value of €900.
Mr Foster made full admissions and had co-operated with the gardaí.

Man threatened girl in shop that he would beat face off her

A man who threatened a girl working in a shop that he would “beat the face off her” received a six month prison sentence at Portlaoise district court on Friday.
PJ O Shea 28, of 207 St. Brigid s Place, Portlaoise was charged with making a threat to another, by any means intending the other to believe it will be carried out, to kill or cause serious harm to that other. He appeared via video link from the Midlands Prison.
Sgt JJ Kirby outlined to the court that on the date in question a young lady was working in the Circle K on the Abbeyleix Road. A male in a black jacket entered the shop who was later identifed as PJ O’Shea.

A woman received a suspended prison sentence for a number of motoring offences at Portlaoise district court last week.
Fiona O Calllaghan, 42, of 30 Buttercup Avenue, Esker Hills, Portlaoise was charged with driving under the influence of an intoxicant, no insurance and no driving licence at Derrycloney, Mountmellick on October 27, 2020.
Garda Dunford told the court that Ms O’Callaghan was stopped at a Covid checkpoint.
She was arrested under Section 4 of the Road Traffic Act. A urine analysis sample showed alcohol in her system.
She was under the limit for alcohol, but there was also two different benzodiazepine tablets in her system, as well as methadone and morphine.
Man sent parcel with menacing words to female prison officer

A 12-month sentence suspended for three years, and with a number of conditions was imposed on a man at Portlaoise district court on Thursday last.
Brian McCann, 36, of 50 Georgian Hamlet, Baldoyle, Dublin 13 was charged with sending a parcel with menacing words on the cover at Kilnacourt, Portarlington on January 11, 2021.
Mr McCann appeared via video link from Arbour Hill Prison, and had been in custody since January 15.
Defence Solicitor Philip Meagher said that the report before the court dealt with the background to the case concisely.
Mr Meagher said that Mr McCann immediately felt bad about it and had tried to put a burning tissue into the mail box to destroy the item. He had tried to stop delivery.
