Earlier in the month, I ran a series on each of the other clubs and the transactions they made after the end of the 2020 season. In this article, I will give you an update on the moves the clubs have made since that series.

Lopes has basically been with the Mariners organization his entire career. Drafted by that club in the 6th round of the 2012 draft out of high school, he was flipped to the Blue Jays on September 30th, 2016 as the player to be named later in an August trade for Pat Venditte. After two seasons, the Mariners brought him back on a minor league deal for 2019 after he was declared an automatic Rule 55 minor league free agent. For all practical purposes, Lopes was a 2nd baseman and 3rd baseman who slapped some singles. In 2019, the Mariners decided to play the Tommy Edman game with him. Sometimes you can kinda see these waiver claims coming from a reasonable distance. So it is with new Cubs outfielder Phillip Ervin, whom the team just claimed off of waivers from the Mariners.
Ervin, 28, is a former top Reds prospect who was a near-league-average bat for the Reds in parts of three seasons from 2017-19, though not much was working for him in the shortened 2020 season. He was DFA’d by the Mariners last week, and now the Cubs have picked him up.

Ervin drove in four runs and batted .149 in 74 at-bats with the Mariners and the Cincinnati Reds last season. In 237 career games, Ervin has 17 home runs and 68 RBI’s, with a career .247 batting average…

The Cubs claimed outfielder
Phillip Ervin off waivers from the Mariners, as announced by both teams. Seattle designated Ervin for assignment last week.
Ervin will return to the NL Central after spending four-plus seasons with the Reds, though his final act in Cincinnati wasn’t a pleasant one. After a solid .262/.326/.438 slash line over 571 PA as a part-timer for the Reds from 2017-19, Ervin had only a .324 OPS over 42 PA for the Reds in 2020. This led to a DFA in late August and a claim by the Mariners, as Ervin hit only somewhat better (.205/.340/.282) in 47 plate appearances for Seattle.
