The story of Augusta-born boxer Bennie Briscoe could be that of Philadelphia s Rocky, if the beloved movie tough guy had never won the big fight.
Born in 1943, Briscoe left Georgia at 16 with few fond memories, except that he once caddied for President Dwight D. Eisenhower at Augusta National Golf Club and was tipped $100.
He went to Philadelphia, found work with the streets department (initially killing rats) and kept at his day job for the next 40 years.
His night job became boxing, and the man they called Bad Bennie was very good.
In a career from 1966 to 1982, he won 66 times with 53 knockouts, lost 25 times and had five draws.

Those old enough know where they were 50 years on this date, Monday, March 8, 1971. It’s one of those indelible moments in sports history, and it involved an event at a time that transcended sports and may never be repeated.
It’s often called the greatest sporting event of the 20th century and though it happened on an illuminated, raised canvas square in the middle of Madison Square Garden in New York City, its roots were firmly entrenched here in Philadelphia.

The grant came from NBCUniversal, which donated an overall $6.5 million to 17 academic institutions of which Morgan received $500,000. The grant will help to offer scholarships to the NBCU Academy that provides professional mentoring, new equipment, seminar course development and guest lecturers. The NBCU Academy will provide journalism training on multiple platforms to provide hands-on learning experiences.
