The San Francisco 49ers announced on Thursday that they have signed five of the team s eight draft picks, each to four-year deals, along with five undrafted rookie free agents.

Aaron Banks (6-5, 325) was selected by the 49ers in the second round (48th overall) of this year s NFL Draft out of Notre Dame. He appeared in 38 games (31 starts) in four years (2017-20) at Notre Dame. As a senior in 2020, he started all 12 games, including an appearance in the CFP Semifinal and was named First-Team AFCA All-America and Associated Press First-Team All-America. He started all 13 games as a junior in 2019 and helped the Irish rank 13th nationally in scoring offense after playing in all 13 games (six starts) as a sophomore in 2018. He did not see game action as a freshman in 2017.

School administrators in Nakusp have shut down the community’s elementary school from May 4 to 16 after some cases of COVID-19 in the school community left most of the staff and students unable to attend classes. A number of staff and students have to self-isolate for 14 days.
“In order to support the Nakusp Elementary School (NES) staff and students who are currently self-isolating, School District 10 has decided to close the school for two weeks due to staffing constraints,” said a release Monday (May 3) written by Interior Health (IH).

Despite the growing struggle for locals to find work in economic-restricted COVID-19 times, a federal government pilot program aimed at increasing immigration into rural and northern areas is entering its second year in the West Kootenay.
Called the Rural and North Immigration Pilot program (RNIP), the program launched May 11 in the West Kootenay region, noted Erin Rooney and Andrea Wilkey from Community Futures Central Kootenay (CFCK) in Nelson.
The West Kootenay region comprised of Nelson, Castlegar, Trail, Rossland and surrounding rural areas was designated as an “area of opportunity” that could benefit from the RNIP and a partnership with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada (IRCC).
