Nature News: It s sea gooseberry season on Gulf of Maine shores Susan Pike A few weeks ago, Seacoast residents Mary Gage and her son James sent me some photos of  beautiful little transparent, gelatinous orbs that they had found washed up on Salisbury Beach. When Mary and James sent the photo, they were wondering whether I knew what these strange creatures were. Here’s how James described them “The creatures are elongated like a football approximately 1¼  to 1 ½  inches long. They were individual creatures not attached to anything. They were surprisingly soft yet at the same time when I rolled it in the palm of my hand it held its shape though it was definitely jelly-like and shifted a little in its shape. Some appeared to have a narrow line of a cloudy substance inside. Most were perfectly clear. It was not sticky or slimy. Jiggled like a cube of Jello. Sand grains stuck to it when rolled on the sand but most fell off when picked up.”
