A father-of-four who intervened to pull a man away from a shop where he had been âhasslingâ his daughter will be sentenced later.
Paul OâNeill (44) was punched and hit in the head with a belt buckle after he grabbed a man outside a shop where he had been refused entry after returning an hour after he had been shouting at OâNeillâs adult daughter who worked there.
Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had directed the case be summarily disposed in the District Court, but that a judge refused jurisdiction after hearing about the behaviour of the co-accused.

A judge has said that a firearm used during a failed robbery was likely an imitation given the “sheer incompetence” displayed by the raider.
Dubliner Derek Ennis (41) pulled his hood down when asked by an employee of a bookmakers just before an attempted robbery in which he failed to steal any money and was “easily identifiable” on CCTV footage as a result.
Ennis of Strandmill Road, Portmarnock pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to attempted robbery at Paddy Power, Seafort Avenue, Sandymount, south Dublin on February 26, 2020.
He has six previous convictions for robbery. His other previous convictions include theft, assault causing harm, endangerment, production of an article in the course of a dispute and possession of drugs for sale or supply.
Man given suspended sentence for punching ex-partner in face

A man who attacked his then partner after returning home from a wedding has received a fully suspended sentence.
Graham Shields (34) “lunged” at his then partner and punched her in the face causing “significant injury”. The assault marked the end of their relationship and had “an extremely profound psychological effect on the injured party”.
Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Shields, who has been diagnosed with an anti-social personality disorder, is now on “cordial terms” with his ex-partner and contributes to the financial well-being of their son.
