The U.S. House District 6 special election will proceed to a June 5 runoff with the widow of the late congressman facing one of two opponents separated by less than 400 votes across the entire three-county district.
Susan Wright, whose husband, Rep. Ron Wright, died in February from complications of COVID-19 and stage-4 lung cancer, led the district with 15,020 votes or 19.2 percent as of 11:04 p.m. Saturday.
Freshman Texas House Rep. Jake Ellzey of Ellis County was second with 10,842 votes or 13.9 percent, and Democrat Jana Lynne Sanchez, an Ellis County native who resides in Fort Worth, was third with 10,476 votes or 13.4 percent with votes still being tabulated late Saturday.
Texas Republican Susan Wright Advances to Runoff in Race for US House Seat
Susan Wright received enough votes to advance to the runoff, getting 19.2 percent of the tally.
Wright entered the race following the death of Rep. Ron Wright (R-Texas), who died after testing positive for COVID-19 in February.
Wright released a short statement late Saturday, writing on Twitter, “Let’s go win this!” She used the hashtag for “Make America Great Again,” President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan.
Trump endorsed Wright last week, telling supporters that she “will be strong on the Border, Crime, Pro-Life, our brave Military and Vets, and will ALWAYS protect your Second Amendment.”
