Process starts for May s school board elections
The school board election process officially started this week, with the application process for the open seats for the Amarillo Independent School District, Canyon ISD and River Road ISD, opening Wednesday. The election is set for May 1.
According to previous Globe-News reports, there are four positions that will be open for each of the respective districts.
Canyon ISD and River Road ISD
For voters who live in Canyon and River Road ISDs, there will be four seats to fill for each respective board. The open positions in Canyon ISD are currently held by Randy Darnell, Bill Jenkins, Matt Parker and Jennifer Winegarner. The open positions in River Road ISD are currently held by Amanda Brown, Danielle Coleman, Dana Finley and Brian Shannon.

Laura Halvorson relies on two 24-hour breathing machines to keep her alive. The machines cost $2,000 per month.
They re paid for through her insurance from the Affordable Care Act. Halvorson, who is 36 and lives in San Antonio, has muscular dystrophy, a disease that causes progressive loss of muscle mass.
For years, Halvorson was a teacher in North Texas and received health insurance through her employer. But eventually her disability progressed to the point that she could no longer work.
Now she s worried that the U.S. Supreme Court will strike down the health care law that has helped her live independently. Without it, Halvorson fears she ll end up in the state s care at a nursing home.

Area school board members up for election
Four area school board positions for the Amarillo Independent School District, Canyon ISD and River Road ISD, respectively, will be up for re-election May 1. The first day to file an application on the ballot for each district is Jan. 13, 2021, and that period lasts through Feb. 12.
The open positions in Amarillo ISD are currently held by Doyle Corder, Robin Malone, Kayla Mendez and David Nance. The open positions in Canyon ISD are currently held by Randy Darnell, Bill Jenkins, Matt Parker and Jennifer Winegarner. The open positions in River Road ISD are currently held by Amanda Brown, Danielle Coleman, Dana Finley and Brian Shannon.
