BUILT HERITAGE: Shakey Bridge (1927) re-opens to public today after a €1 7 million restoration

Pic: Brian Lougheed The heritage bridge was formally re-opened Thursday December 17 by the Lord Mayor, Cllr Joe Kavanagh in a small Covid-compliant ceremony at noon. The refurbishment and conservation works, which cost over €1.7 million, were undertaken to address serious corrosion and extensive damage to the 50.9 metre suspension bridge. This is the third heritage bridge in the city to be refurbished in recent years and follows St Patrick’s Bridge and St Vincents Bridge on North Mall.

The Songstress presents the 2020 Christmas Jingle Pic; Brian Lougheed The Christmas Jingle Concert will return this year and move online. Big names such as Mick Flannery will join the jam-packed festive line-up for the hugely popular concert. All proceeds from the concert will go to Enable Ireland. The concert will not only stream to people’s homes it will also be played in care homes and hospitals across Cork this year. This is the fourth year of the very popular The Christmas Jingle and as always it will feature a multitude of top singers and musicians from Cork. The charity concert will be the usual format of live performances of all the classic Christmas songs and they are even keeping their usual raffle with fantastic prizes. This year people all over Cork will be able to sing along from their own homes.

Minister for Planning and Local Government visits West Cork

Pic: Brian Lougheed The Minister for Planning and Local Government, Peter Burke TD, has described Cork County Council’s role in the local response to the COVID-19 pandemic to date as vital. He was speaking during a visit to Bandon to thank local authority staff for their work and visit businesses who have benefited from local authorities’ supports. Cork County Council has provided a range of economic and social supports in response to challenges arising from the pandemic. These have included: €28 million in Restart Grants administered to businesses, 913 Trading Online Vouchers and 715 Business Continuity Vouchers so far in 2020
