AstraZeneca has been grappling with manufacturing difficulties at a facility in Belgium, which has resulted in a delay to the number of Covid vaccines the company can supply to the EU in the first three months of this year. This has escalated into a public spat between the company and Brussels.
The EU has accused AstraZeneca of breaking a contract and of orchestrating a commercially-motivated plot to deny Europeans the vaccine by diverting doses to countries that have paid more for them. AstraZeneca insists manufacturing difficulties lie behind the delay, pointing out that it is supplying the vaccine at cost globally, and so not motivated by money, and doing everything it can to get things back on track.
