Ritual and rhetoric are subdued; members of color reach historic high in Oregon.
The new Oregon Legislature was light on the usual ritual and rhetoric during its opening day on Monday, Jan. 11 though they were present but heavy on the realities that have reshaped state politics during the past year.
All 60 representatives and 17 new senators took their oaths from Chief Justice Martha Walters. But unlike typical opening days which have been compared to the first day of school staff, families and friends were largely absent from the Capitol in Salem because of social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

SALEM, Ore. Less than two weeks before tens of thousands of Oregon households were due to be evicted, state lawmakers came through.
During a one-day special session in Salem, lawmakers passed a list of bills aimed at keeping Oregonians in their homes while helping struggling landlords and businesses stay afloat.
Chief among them, Senate Bill 5731 and House Bill 4401. In short, an $800-million relief package for Oregonians impacted by the pandemic and this summers wildfires.

Oregon legislators have approved an emergency bill extending the state s moratorium on residential evictions until June 30, 2021. The vote, held during Oregon s third special legislative session of 2020, comes just ten days before the state s current moratorium expires. If we do not pass this bill, thousands of families will be homeless come January, said Rep. Julie Fahey, the Lane County legislator who sponsored the bill, during the legislation s reading Monday. And it will be on us.
By 5:30 pm on Monday s one-day special session, both the House and Senate had approved the bill. Gov. Kate Brown is expected to sign the legislation.
