Jean-Paul Chartrand : Pourquoi pas un 13e round? (boxe)

IBF orders Jermell Charlo to face Bakhram Murtazaliev

Photo by Edward A. Ornelas/Getty Images As much as the boxing world would like to see Jermell Charlo and Brian Castano immediately run back last Saturday’s terrific battle in San Antonio, we may have to wait a bit. Jake Donovan reports that the IBF has ordered Charlo to face mandatory challenger Bakhram Murtazaliev, who already stepped aside for Charlo’s bouts with Castano and Jeison Rosario. The Grozny-born, Oxnard-based Murtazaliev (19-0, 14 KO) soundly defeated Jorge Fortea in a November 2019 eliminator to earn a spot atop the sanctioning body’s 154-pound rankings. He’s since stayed busy with a fourth-round finish of Manny Woods and a unanimous decision over Khiary Gray, the latter of which took place on that same Charlo (34-1-1, 18 KO) vs. Castano card, while the belt changed hands from Julian Williams to Rosario to Charlo.

Judge Nelson Vazquez defends 117-111 scorecard

Photo by Edward A. Ornelas/Getty Images “It was a close fight, but in the sense that there were a lot of close rounds, and that is always a matter of appreciation. A judge can see an assault in one way, and another in another.” He went on to claim that if both of the other judges had scored the fight 117-111 for the Argentinian, he would be more concerned about how widely he scored it for Charlo. The suggestion here seems to be that if he had scored every round differently than the other two judges, fans could more credibly accuse him of incompetence or corruption.

Jermell Charlo: I Don t Want To Become Undisputed By A Narrow Controversial Decision

By: Sean Crose “Brian Castano is one hell of a better fighter than anyone gave him credit for and he came to fight for his life Saturday,” Jermell Charlo has posted on Instagram, referring to his battle for the undisputed junior middleweight championship of the world last Saturday night. The fight between Charlo and Castano was just a terrific affair that was ultimately ruled a draw. Unfortunately, one of the three judges at ringside ruled so widely for Charlo that it put a damper on the entire affair, a sad addition to a great night of boxing, to be sure.
