(WIS) - The US Census reports that 27% of South Carolinians are black or African American, yet less than 15% of the people who have started getting vaccinated in our state belong to this group. Some faith and community-based leaders in the African American community are saying vaccine hesitancy and access are playing a role. On Monday, Brookland Baptist Church announced a vaccine site will be rolling out at their church on Thursday in partnership with Lexington Medical Center. Brookland Baptist Senior Pastor Charles B. Jackson said the goal is to increase access and trust in the vaccine to overcome some of the vaccine hesitancy he has witnessed in minority communities in Columbia and across the state.

But for three African American men it was a Tuesday of historical proportions a symbol of progress since the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. James Felder, Isaac Samuel (I.S.) Leevy Johnson and Herbert Fielding entered the State House as the first elected Black lawmakers to serve in the Legislature since the turn of the 20th century.

The award recognizes current and former long-term Canadian citizens in the province who have contributed to the economic, cultural and social wellbeing. The awards will be given out on New Brunswick Day on August 2nd by Lieutenant-Governor Brenda Murphy. “In my role, it has been a privilege to meet so many amazing New Brunswickers from across the province, each with unique perspectives and life experiences,” said Murphy. “There are so many exceptional individuals who deserve to be recognized for making our province a more vibrant and inclusive place. I encourage you to honour the achievements of those who stand out for their continued contributions to our province by nominating them for the Order of New Brunswick.”
