In April 1961 â sixty years ago this spring â Gov. Lindsay Almond toured Southwest Virginia.
One of the stops on his tour was Clinch Valley College, what today is known as the University of Virginiaâs College at Wise, where school officials did what school officials everywhere do when a governor comes to visit: They asked for more funding.
Hereâs what caught our eye in The Roanoke Times account of the governorâs stop at the college: School officials âsaid they are unable to project Clinch Valleyâs future enrollments because of uncertainty in the coal fields. The populations of mining towns are declining because of mechanization of the mines.â

May 15, 1868: The East Tennessee Union Flag reported, âWe have now had nearly a month of incessant rain and âstill it rains.â We fear many of our farmers will be late in getting in their crops.â
The East Tennessee Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way at the time.
May 15, 1901: The Knoxville Sentinel, with a dateline from Johnson City, reported,
âThe Banking & Trust company (sic) of the city will reorganize June 4, and will be known after that date as the Unaka National bank (sic) with a capital of $50,000. The application to organize as a national bank has been approved by the comptroller of the currency. The same officers will be in charge of the bank: John D. Cox, president; S.C. Williams, vice-president; Tate L. Earnest, cashier.â
May 14, 1869: The Union Flag reported, âIn this place on the 11th inst., Mrs. Dennis, aged 35 yrs. Daughter of Dr. J.C. Cossen, deceased.â
As used here, âinstâ, was a term used to mean âIn the same monthâ, so this meant that Mrs. Dennis had passed away on May 11, 1869.

May 14, 1903: The Chattanooga News, with a Johnson City dateline, reported on a near-riot in Johnson City. âJohnson City has had a narrow escape from a serious riot. The trouble originated in a fight on the midway. âBussâ Hale, a well known character of this place, became involved in a difficulty with Joseph A. Sanborn, an attaché of one of the carnival shows. As a result Hale stabbed the showman, the knife inflicting a painful wound near the heart which is about four inches long and two inches deep.â
