VIDEO: Mouse deer taking first steps at Bristol Zoo

A tiny mouse deer has been born to first-time mother Brienne at Bristol Zoo Gardens during the third national lockdown. Despite its deceivingly long legs, the delicate lesser Malayan mouse deer stands at around 20cm (8 inches) tall to its shoulder - around the same height as a standard pencil. When it is fully grown, the infant will weigh around 1.5kg (around 3lbs). The infant, whose gender is not yet known, was born almost a month ago inside their enclosure alongside the Zoo’s Livingstone’s fruit bats. It is the second to be born at the Zoo in the past decade. In 2020, a female named Missandei was born and moved on to Ouwehands Zoo in the Netherlands to continue the breeding programme for the species.

Bristol Zoo and Wild place leaders in prestigious awards

Bristol Zoological Society’s two sites – Bristol Zoo Gardens and Wild Place Project – are perfect fresh-air destinations for this coming half-term after both winning recent awards. Wild Place Project was recently named Bristol, Bath & Somerset Tourism Awards’ ‘Visitor Attraction of the Year’, and last year Bristol Zoo Gardens was a winner of Visit England’s ‘Best Told Story’. Both offer acres of outdoor space and the chance to get close to animals from all over the globe, including many endangered species. Visitors to Bristol Zoo can see the youngest gorilla, Juni, who was born in December. He lives on Gorilla Island with his mum, Touni, and dad, Jock, together with the rest of the troop of western lowland gorillas.

Baby gorilla at Bristol Zoo named after parents

By Press Association 2021 Bristol Zoo s baby western lowland gorilla has been named Juni after his parents, Jock and Touni (Ben Birchall/PA). A four-month-old baby gorilla has been named Juni – after his mother and father. The tiny western lowland gorilla was given the name following a poll of staff and volunteers at Bristol Zoo who opted for the one which combined those of his parents, Jock and Touni. Touni, 13, gave birth naturally to Juni in the early hours of December 22, with father Jock and the rest of the family troop nearby. He is Touni’s second baby, as she gave birth to big sister Ayana – who still lives at the zoo – in April 2017.
