Yankees fans who were following the team a quarter century ago probably still have no love lost for 1995 staff ace Jack McDowell, who is returning to baseball this year as manager in a developmental summer league.
The right-hander is a Chicago White Sox great, and while his one season in Yankees pinstripes looks good on paper, that doesn’t tell half of his story from that roller coaster year. Although leading the ’95 Yankees with 15 wins and racking up an AL-best eight complete games for a ballclub that ended the franchise’s long postseason drought at 13 seasons, McDowell earned his standing as a hated Yankee.
