Taxes are due in a month, but what does this mean for New Yorkers who were unemployed last year due to the pandemic?
When the federal government passed the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 in March, Congress included an exemption so at least a portion of unemployment benefits from 2020 will not be federally taxed.
People whose adjusted gross income was less than $150,000 can exclude up to $10,200 of unemployment benefits from taxes in 2020.
However, State Budget Director Robert Mujica announced the state will still be taxing these unemployment benefits despite changes on the federal level.

Home care workers, their advocates and several New York state senators gathered virtually Wednesday to denounce Governor Andrew Cuomo for blocking the Fair Pay for Home Care Act in the new state budget. “I have to work four jobs to be able to pay all of my bills. The cost of living is so high here in New York. My rent is $1,500 a month. And that’s about how much it costs just to live somewhere decent in New York,” Person says. “My transportation is $135 a month for the metro card. The phone and cable are over $200 a month, health care insurance over $100 a month, and food, forget about it.”
LOWVILLE â With no public questions or comments during the public hearing held during their April meeting Tuesday, the Lewis County Board of Legislators unanimously approved the police reform plan created by the local committee in charge of the state-mandated process.
The hearing was followed by a vote passing the resolution to accept the Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative Task Forceâs report and the three-pronged training and networking-focused suggestions that came out of the meetings and a public survey between December and March.
The county will file its police reform report with the state Director of the Division of Budget. The report will also be distributed to all county department heads and other offices as soon as necessary by the county manager.

(Enterprise photo â Aaron Cerbone) The full details of New York’s 2021-22 budget are not yet fully known, but it includes new funding for environmental protection, including overuse in the Adirondacks. According to Democratic Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, the budget sets aside $1.55 million to address overuse in the Catskill and Adirondack parks. The budget also includes $300 million for the state Environmental Protection Fund and, if voters approve, $3 billion for the “Restore Mother Nature” Environmental Bond Act to fund environmental restoration projects. This bond act will be on the ballot in the November 2022 general election.
