As part of efforts to enhance civil-military relations, the Armed Forces often carry out free medical rhapsodies in their host communities. Chiemelie Ezeobi reports that recently, the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army carried out such free medical outreaches in Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State and Ajah- Ilaje Community in Lagos For the military, they would often want the society to understand that they are more than their guns and that’s why they are often engaged in community services to the respective communities in their Areas of Responsibility (AOR). While some might see such moves as corporate social responsibility (CSR), the underlying factor is that it helps to enhance Civil-Military Relations (CMR). In essence, what this does is to strengthen the ties binding the military and civil populace.

No fewer than 2,520 residents of Nchatancha Nike, Obinagu Nike, Akpoga Nike and Mbulujodo Nike communities in Enugu East Council of Enugu State have benefited from the Nigerian Army’s free and comprehensive medical outreach. The mission provided free consultation, dental checks and treatment, eye checks and eyeglasses, wheelchairs and crutches, as well as insecticide treated mosquito nets. General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, said the exercise was meant to cement the relationship between the Nigerian Army and civil populace. Lagbaja, who was represented by the Chief of Staff of the Division, Brig.-Gen. Greg Omorogbe, said the exercise was part of activities planned to commemorate the 158th anniversary of the Nigerian Army.

Gideon Arinze in Enugu The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Maj. Gen. Farouk Yahaya, has applauded troops of 82 Division of the Nigerian Army for quelling insurrection and arson in the South-east. Yahaya praised them during a combined special church service held in commemoration of the 2021 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) at St. Martin’s Military Catholic Church, Abakpa Military Cantonment in Enugu. The service was to celebrate the 158 birthday of the Nigerian Army and its service to the nation and humanity. Yahaya, who was represented by the General Officer Commanding the 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, Maj. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, saluted the courage, patriotism, loyalty and commitment of the troops in defence of the nation.
