BARVEN, fish markets close early

Social Share Earlier today, customers and vendors in the Barbados Association of Retailers Vendors and Entrepreneurs (BARVEN) market on the Mighty Grynner Highway braved the cloud of ash which hung heavily across the island. Head of BARVEN Alistair Alexander said they had a duty to supply Barbadians with food and that is what they came out to do. He added they would not be out for as long as customary, given the waning visibility. At the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex on Princess Alice Highway, vendors were busily trying to sell fish to last minute customers over the fence, as the guards closed the gate stopping people from entering.

Repairs to berths and jetties soon, boats to be moved

Article by Social Share The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy will soon begin repairs of berths and jetties at the Bridgetown Fisheries Complex, in St Michael and the Berinda Cox Fish Market, Oistins, Christ Church. A statement from the ministry today said, as a result, boat owners and fishermen will be periodically advised to move their vessels to different areas. “Immediately vessels located in the Bridgetown market, berthed in the area of the transhipment shed, stretching to the entrance of the first jetty, are being asked to move their vessels,” the statement said.  (PR)

Vendors told Barbados TODAY that the situation is so dire that they consider business in December to be the worst it has been in many years, leaving them to wonder what type of Christmas they will have. Andy Small said the past three weeks have been a struggle for him and his colleagues at the market and they are concerned that the situation may not improve as the yuletide season draw nearer.
