The hospital says it rescheduled fewer than a dozen operations over the past three weeks because of a national supply chain shortage of blood products caused by severe weather.

A national supply chain shortage of blood products has forced Maine Medical Center in Portland to reschedule surgeries in recent weeks, as record-breaking cold and winter weather has caused blood drives to be canceled in several states.
“Paralyzing winter weather across most of the U.S. this month has challenged not only the collection of lifesaving blood products, but also the distribution to support patients in need,” said Jessa Merrill, a spokesperson for the American Red Cross. “Icy roads and precipitation have challenged the ability of many blood providers, including the American Red Cross, to get lifesaving blood products to hospitals in impacted areas – especially Texas.”

The site, to be run by Central Maine Medical Center, would be the first in central Maine, after others have been announced in Bangor and greater Portland.
CONWAY â Memorial Hospital has been looking at the possibility of opening up a vaccination clinic in the nearby Fryeburg, Maine, area in order to reach patients of the hospital who live in the Pine Tree State.
Located in North Conway, Memorial is the only New Hampshire hospital in the MaineHealth system, which includes Maine Medical Center in Portland and a dozen other health-care facilities in Maine.
Memorial officials have said they want to serve all the people in the Mount Washington Valley community regardless of state lines or whether those individuals are patients of the hospital.
The hospital opened a New Hampshire vaccination site at the former Mt. Washington Observatory Weather Discovery Center in North Conway for Carroll County residents but must find another option if it wants to reach people in nearby Maine communities.
