It s been an emotional last few days for people in the James Bay community of Attawapiskat.
Dozens on the Ontario First Nation watched Wednesday night as St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church burned to the ground.

The St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church caught fire Wednesday. The church was 104 years old.
No cause of the fire is known yet.
The wooden church had six stained-glass windows and an oil painting inside. The painting was eight feet wide and 12 feet tall and was installed in the church in the 1920s, according to a local resident.

The St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Attawapiskat caught fire yesterday April 21, 2021. The historic church, which was built in the 1930 s, is one of the oldest buildings in the community. It was mostly constructed by the local people using lumber gathered and milled in the community.
As of now there have been no reports of any injuries, and firefighters contained the fire to help prevent the spread of flames and further damage to any other surrounding buildings.
Currently the cause of the fire is unknown. This story will be updated as more information about the cause of the fire becomes known.
