Ogdensburg accepts draft development plan, planners and public to review

Sunday, April 4, 2021 - 5:05 pm BY JIMMY LAWTON North Country This Week OGDENSBURG – Despite some debate over ensuring the need for adequate public review and assurances it would not replace the Local Waterfront Revitalization Plan, Ogdensburg City Council agreed to accept a draft Community Development Plan. Deputy Mayor John Rishe with some help from fellow councilors drafted a 30-page plan. Despite frequent disagreements between factions of the city council, the plan passed 6-0. Councilor Nichole Kennedy was not present. Councilor Daniel Skamperle said while he has some ideas that differ from the draft, he believes it s a good place to start.

Photo by Beth Kingston After a long, cold winter, one of the first signs that spring is right around the corner is the tapping of trees for the maple sap harvest. This March, visitors to Genesee Country Village & Museum can join in the fun during the Maple Sugar Festival and Pancake Breakfast. It’s a chance to enjoy the outdoors as winter begins to fade and the woods come alive with sap flowing and maple syrup boiling. This year, visitors to the Museum get an extra day each weekend to enjoy all the sweet activities, with the new addition of Fridays to the Festival lineup. Tickets for both the Festival and Breakfast will be pre-sale only, through the Museum’s website at gcv.org beginning March 1.

Waterfront development, job creation, downtown improvements proposed in O burg plan

Wednesday, March 10, 2021 - 5:21 pm BY JIMMY LAWTON North Country This Week OGDENSBURG – Deputy Mayor John Rishe with some help from fellow councilors has drafted a 30-page Community Development Plan which he hopes will be reviewed by the planning board and the public in coming months with adoption anticipated this summer. Rishe called for such a plan not long after being elected, but with a focus on cutting costs, preparing such a document is typically a pricey endeavor. Rishe, who serves as an economic developer at the OBPA, decided to take action on his own. The document addresses economic development and job creation, waterfront redevelopment, downtown redevelopment, tourism, housing, historic preservation, recreation, transportation, education, arts and culture, New York State facilities and the tax rate.

jward@observertoday.com Vaccinations and the cost of the pandemic were at center stage during Thursday’s State of the State presentation by Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul to officials and members of the Chautauqua County community. The event was hosted by the city of Dunkirk and Mayor Wilfred Rosas. “We’ve been very focused on not just battling the pandemic and testing and getting supplies out and now vaccinations, but also simultaneously staying focused on continuing our economic recovery because we saw great numbers a year ago,” Hochul said. Local areas of interest in keeping the economy going were Athenex, which Hochul said is going to be begin its manufacturing soon. She said the company will be investing $1.5 billion over the next 10 years.
