Southwestern Oklahoma State University has announced a major gift from longtime SWOSU benefactor and 1980 alumnus Mike North of Oklahoma City.
The North Family Endowment has been established to provide ongoing support to the SWOSU Department of Parks & Recreation Management.
North and his wife, Marilyn Flinchum, are enthusiastic and generous donors to many SWOSU causes including the SWOSU President’s Leadership Class and the SWOSU Charitable Hunt. They are also Founder-level investors in the SWOSU Bulldog Angels Fund, which provides assistance to SWOSU students facing crisis.
In addition to providing substantial, much-needed scholarship support to PRM students on an annual basis, the North Family Endowment will celebrate and award the outstanding PRM graduate each year via the North Family Medal recognition. The North Family Endowment will also offer the local community annual public information on PRM issues and developments through the North Family

Dr. Joel Kendall has been selected as the new provost and vice president of academic affairs at Southwestern Oklahoma State University (SWOSU) in Weatherford and Sayre, according to incoming SWOSU President Dr. Diana Lovell and current President Randy Beutler.Kendall has been serving as SWOSU’s associate provost since 2018.
“SWOSU, for many years, has enjoyed an outstanding academic reputation, and I look forward to working with Dr. Kendall in this important position as we continue that long-standing mission of the university,” Lovell said.
As vice president of academic affairs, Kendall is chief academic officer at SWOSU. The appointment is subject to Regional University System of Oklahoma (RUSO) regents’ approval.

It took 130 years, but the glass ceiling finally was shattered with Dr. Kayse Shrum’s selection as Oklahoma State University’s next president – the first woman to lead one of the state’s two comprehensive research institutions.
Historic, yes. Symbolic, too. But what it says to the wider world about early 21st century Oklahoma may turn out to be most important.
Unfortunately, Oklahoma’s reputation nationally takes a beating every time our uber-right, male-dominated Legislature pursues policies that disadvantage women, minorities and the poor.
