Mobile Museum of Tolerance stops in Springfield, Illinois

A multicolored bus with the faces of a diverse group of powerful historical figures rolled into Springfield this week with intentions of having conversations that will have lasting impacts throughout the state. Inside the bus, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Anne Frank and Jackie Robinson are among the faces featured on the walls with quotes communicating powerful and thought-provoking messages.  On Monday, the Mobile Museum of Tolerance an initiative of Chicago’s Simon Wiesenthal Center made a temporary home for itself outside the State House Inn on East Adams Street where it will remain until Thursday. The mission of the mobile museum is to provide a space where people of all ages and backgrounds can learn about the societal impact of intolerance, in an effort to empower them to take steps to combat things like hate, bullying and racism.

Teachers have been forced to confront difficult decisions during this pandemic of whether to return to the classroom, stick with virtual learning or even continue teaching at all. In Illinois, many teachers have chosen retirement. The Chicago Tribune reported in October that from July to September, 566 teachers across Illinois retired, citing concerns about the Coronavirus and the new teaching environment it created, a 45% increase compared with the same period last year.

One of these, he said, is funding.   “It’s actually well accepted by Legislators and educators alike that our funding mechanism is not equitable,” Klaisner said. “It’s not fair, it’s not consistent.”
