Religious secularism groups blast Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville for ‘rants about school prayer’

Two groups that promote religious secularism are taking aim at Republican Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville’s inaugural Senate floor speech in which the former college football coach advocated bringing “God and prayer back into schools.”
Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation, and the Washington, D.C.-based Americans United for Separation of Church and State issued statements Tuesday condemning the freshman senator for wrongly suggesting that prayer had been removed from U.S. public schools. They also blasted him for not taking what they believe is a more serious approach toward educational improvement.

The Alabama Republican Party elected a new chairman at its winter meeting today in Montgomery.
The party picked John Wahl, a butterfly farmer from Athens, who was the only candidate to replace Terry Lathan. Lathan had announced in December she would not seek another term. Lathan has led the party since 2015.
Wahl has been senior vice chairman, the number two position, since 2019.

Pat Roberts is joining Capitol Counsel as a partner, making the longtime Ag Committee chair the latest former pol to go through the revolving door since leaving Congress last month. Roberts, who was first elected to the House in 1981 before winning election to the Senate in 1997, is the longest-serving member of Congress from Kansas. Roberts helped shepherd multiple farm bills through Congress, most recently in 2018, and also served on the Finance, HELP, Ethics and Rules committees.
