New SC law requires doctors to offer overdose-reversal drug prescriptions

Gov. Henry McMaster has signed a new law this week requiring physicians to offer certain patients prescriptions for an overdose-reversal drug such as naloxone in an effort to combat the growing opioid epidemic. Senate Bill 571, first recommended by the state House Opioid Abuse Prevention Study Committee, was introduced Feb. 17 and signed into law on Thursday. State Rep. Russell Fry, a Republican from Surfside Beach, Sen. Brad Hutto, a Democrat from Orangeburg, and Sen. Katrina Shealy, a Republican from Lexington, sponsored the legislation. The bill requires a prescriber to offer a patient a prescription for naloxone or another overdose-reversal drug based on a specific set of criteria. The goal is to combat the opioid epidemic by reducing the number of accidental overdose deaths.
