Posted: May 16, 2021 9:36 AM Posted By: Mary Peters ROCHESTER, Minn. - Saturday was a great day for those who like to cast their poles.  It was the opening day for fishing of walleye, bass, northern pike, and trout in Minnesota lakes, rivers, and streams.  If you re dropping a line this weekend, the Minnesota DNR says there are a few things you can expect. The weather has been cool enough that fish will most likely be behaving as they would during a normal fishing opener, despite the early warm-up this year.

Half-Million Anglers Expected For Minnesota Fishing Opener

MINNESOTA – The summer fishing season is now officially open in Minnesota. State officials are predicting about a half-million anglers will be trying to catch walleye, bass, northern pike and trout this weekend. The D-N-R’s Brad Parsons says fishing has never been more popular in the state based on license sales. Parson says we’re actually right on par with last year, which is good because last year was our best year in 20 years. He says fishing conditions should be good in Minnesota, based on normal water temperatures this spring. The Governor’s Fishing Opener was in Otter Tail County this year after being canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic.
