The head of the World Health Organization said the world is in “a very dangerous period,” with the delta variant detected in at least 98 countries.
Anthony Fauci, the top U.S. infectious-disease official, said he doesn’t expect another nationwide spike despite the spread of the variant. The Biden administration is planning events this weekend to celebrate progress combating the pandemic, though the country fell short of his July 4 vaccination goal.
South Africa, which is reporting record daily cases, gave conditional approval for use of the CoronaVac vaccine manufactured by China’s Sinovac Biotech Ltd. Indonesia is also seeing record infections and deaths, while new cases in Seoul and its metropolitan area hovered above 600 for a fourth day.
