BRUNSWICK COUNTY – Town Creek Elementary School in Winnabow has turned Wednesday into a teacher workday due to a “staffing issue.”
The school is simultaneously dealing with increased Covid-19 activity that has caused it to transition to remote learning Thursday.
On Thursday, all grade levels will learn from home. The next day, Friday, is the start of the break for students.
According to the district’s Covid-19 dashboard, there have been nine confirmed cases of the coronavirus this week at the elementary school. Sixty-three people have been asked to quarantine after coming in contact with another positive individual.
The school system has reported 115 cases in its facilities since Sept. 21. Of those, 82 are recovered.
During the holiday season, more people are expected to travel for close gatherings with family and friends.
Health officials have noted this may increase the spread of COVID-19, which has been on the rise since November.
The Centers for Disease Control recently advised against travel during the holiday season, saying in a news briefing that the best way to protect yourself and others is to postpone travel and stay home.
Although Wilmington-area pre-K and elementary schools will resume in-person instruction for the spring semester, no school systems in the three-county region have advised parents against holiday travel.
“As the holiday season approaches, we understand that more travel opportunities for families will arise, which means more opportunities for exposure,” said Alex Riley, spokesman for Pender County Schools. “Pender County Schools will continue to utilize the expertise of our school nurses and work with the Pender County Health Department to monitor positive
All Brunswick County students will begin the second semester remotely.
School board members decided to move to Plan C, or 100% remote learning, at all grade levels after learning about current COVID-19 trends earlier today, according to a press release from the district.
As of Tuesday, there are 33 positive and actively quarantined cases throughout the school system, according to the school s COVID-19 dashboard. The highest number of cases is at Town Creek Elementary, where there are nine cases.
In addition, there are more than 230 people who are quarantined due to close contact with someone who tested positive. Town Creek Elementary again has the highest number with 63 people quarantined. Since Sept. 21, Brunswick County Schools reports there have been 115 total positive cases throughout the school system.
