Engaging with Lagos State s drive towards energy federalism, by Odion Omonfoman

LASG is on the right track with the proposed electricity policy and we applaud the State government for this pioneering effort to decentralise and democratise the supply of electricity to Lagosians. Other States should emulate the LASG electricity policy and start to fashion out their own electricity policies and state electricity laws. This is what we’ve termed “Energy Federalism”. The Lagos State government recently released a consultation paper on the Lagos State Electricity Policy. The consultation paper, signed by Mr Olalere Odusote, the Commissioner of Energy and Mineral Resources, highlights the need for Lagos State to develop its own electricity policy to address the rapid urbanisation of Lagos State, leading to increasing demand for electricity, and the inherent electricity shortages that have hindered the socio-economic growth of the State. The Nigerian Police Force: Up the creek without a paddle, By Osmund Agbo The house of Police does not need a make-over; it needs to be completely re-built. On paper, Nigeria is a republic consisting of individual federating units. In practice, however, what obtains is a highly centralised system where the Force reports directly to the President. Police officers today have been granted permission to show up to duty in street clothes, acting more like secret agents in the shadowy world of espionage. Once upon a time, it used to be tha

Escalating Insecurity: A National Malaise

The nation’s insecurity is worsening, the challenges are humongous, and the solutions have been elusive so far. The recent escalation of clashes between security agencies and local insurgents in the South East, have heightened the calls for Government to urgently rethink its strategies for combatting the security challenges in Eastern Nigeria and other hotspots like Benue State, where there are killings almost on a daily basis. The Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, was not left out, as there was an attempt to assassinate him earlier this year in March, while seven internally displaced persons taking refuge in a Camp in Abagena, Makurdi were murdered last week. Policemen and other security personnel, have also not been spared, as several of them have lost their lives in the violence. At least five Policemen were killed about two weeks ago in Okigwe, Imo State, while others suffered the same fate of death in Rivers State. Norrison Quakers, SAN, Professor Andrew Chukwumerie, SAN
