Family of learner allegedly hit and called the K-word by teacher want justice By Chulumanco Mahamba Share Johannesburg - The family of the Northriding Secondary School learner who was allegedly hit, sprayed with sanitiser and called the K-word by a teacher have vowed to get justice. An Afrikaans teacher at Northriding Secondary School was suspended on Thursday following an alleged racist incident in which the female educator allegedly hit a Grade 8 learner and called other learners “baboons, drug dealers and k s”. Education Department spokesperson Steve Mabona told the media at the school on Friday that initial investigations indicated that an altercation over noise-making occurred on Thursday morning between a Grade 8 learner and an educator.

Yes, we pay our taxes which must pay for the education of our children. Government continues to say they do not have enough money to fund education properly. The educator has since been suspended, which Lesufi’s office has welcomed. “As a Department, we are extremely disappointed about this incident – racism will never be tolerated in our schools. Educators must always teach and guide learners; not fight them. We welcome the move by the School Governing Body to suspend the teacher with immediate effect while disciplinary processes are being finalised,” Lesufi said during a visit to the school on Friday 7 May 2021.

Gauteng Department of Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi visited the school on Friday morning to get to the bottom of the incident. The allegations came after the friend of the affected pupil’s parents posted on social media that the 14-year-old pupil was called a K-word by a teacher at the school. Speaking to the media at the school, spokesperson for the department, Steve Mabona said the incident started in a Grade 8 Afrikaans class on Thursday morning.
