COOCH BEHAR/ALIPURDUAR: Sitting on a wooden chair in his small book store, Surojit Dey was looking at the BJP roadshow marching along the arterial road of Alipurduar.
The small town in north Bengal never experienced such an election extravaganza thousands of people, lines of decorated vehicles and dozens of musical bands. The crowd continued roaring ‘Jai Shri Ram’.
“Look at the faces. They represent all segments of our society college students, government employees, daily wage workers. Most of them are Dalits who used to be the strength of our party five years ago,’’ said Surojit, a TMC worker.

KOLKATA: With 48 hours to go for the fourth phase of polls in West Bengal, BJP’s Bengal chapter organised a high-decibel campaign in Alipurduar on Thursday featuring its national president JP Nadda.
The procession, decorated with balloons, placards, flags, travelled through the heart of the city. Alipurduar, comprising five Assembly constituencies, is one of the two districts in north Bengal where first phase of polls will be held on Saturday.
Three IIEST-Shibpur departments shut over Covid
Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, has decided to keep three departments closed till April 11 after some faculty members attached to these departments tested positive for Covid-19, an official of the institute said. Sources in the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) said arrangements would be made for sanitisation of civil engineering, physics and architecture, town and regional planning departments, which will remain closed till Sunday. Classes at the institute are being held online but the teachers are visiting the campus.
