The breeze may have gone into hiding on the Hauraki Gulf yesterday for the Prada Christmas Race, but the previous three days had shown the potential for the Prada Cup Challenger Series, starting on January 15, and the America s Cup, which Emirates Team New Zealand will defend, in March.

Thousands have turned out on land and on water, and millions have watched from their screens, to capture the start of the 36th America’s Cup presented by Prada this week in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.
From the opening of the Race Village on Tuesday to Emirates Team New Zealand’s World Series win on Saturday, Auckland has come to life following a three year wait to defend the Cup on home shores.
Yesterday (Saturday), Emirates Team New Zealand claimed the Prada America’s Cup World Series Auckland after beating Team Luna Rossa by 0:16 seconds. While today’s sailing did not produce a winner of the Prada Christmas Race the crowds still turned out to make the most of the festive atmosphere around the region.

After a disastrous opening day which saw them suffer with technical gremlins, Ineos Team UK had a much more encouraging second day at the America’s Cup World Series event in Auckland.
Although they lost both races to defenders Emirates Team New Zealand, moving to four losses and zero wins in the series so far, Sir Ben Ainslie’s team stayed up on their foils throughout both races and showed decent boat speed.

Delayed eight months due to COVID-19, four America’s Cup crews finally get to face off against each other in their fantastical-looking boats that fly across the tops of the waves on hydrofoils.
Defending champion Emirates Team New Zealand and challengers American Magic, INEOS Team UK and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Team of Italy will race in the America’s Cup World Series Auckland and the Prada Christmas Race on Thursday through Sunday, New Zealand time, on the Hauraki Gulf.
It will be the only warmup regatta prior to the start of the 36th America’s Cup in January. The Prada Cup for challengers will run Jan. 15-Feb. 22, with the winner advancing to face Team New Zealand in the America’s Cup match March 6-21.
