FRENCHVILLE, Maine A few days after a massive fire burned the Dr. Levesque Elementary School in Frenchville, MSAD #33 school officials and school board members have been meeting throughout the week to decide the fate of the students education this upcoming school year.
Most of the school is now in ashes, and officials have determined that even though a part of the school is partially standing, the entire school is a total loss.

A Maine elementary school that was devastated by a fire over the weekend did not have a sprinkler system and was not required to because of its age, the state fire marshal said.
The wings of the Dr. Levesque Elementary School in Frenchville that burned down were constructed in 1963, prior to building codes mandating sprinkler systems in schools, Fire Marshal Joe Thomas told NECN and NBC 10 Boston Tuesday. There is no blame, they didn t do anything wrong, said Thomas of the school district, adding that, until the 1990s, we didn t see fire suppression in schools at all.
Cause of Frenchville Elementary School Fire Still Undetermined
Investigators from the Maine State Fire Marshal s Office say extensive damage at the Elementary School in Frenchville may prevent them from determining the cause of the blaze.
The Frenchville Fire Department responded to the Dr. Levesque Elementary School just before 7 a.m. Sunday. Crews arrived to find heavy fire in the roof of the building.
Fort Kent, Madawaska, St. Agatha and North Lakes Fire Departments also responded to assist in fighting the fire. The building s metal roof made it difficult for firefighters to get to the flames. Gusty winds also hampered efforts to bring the blaze under control.
