The American novelist, playwright and art collector Gertrude Stein was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and raised in Oakland, California, but moved to France at the beginning of the 20th century. Of that transition, she once famously said: âAmerica is my country, and Paris is my home town.â
A century later, the global wanderings of Australian actor Melissa George might be a shimmering reflection of Steinâs own journey; one which saw Melissa exchange her home town of Perth for Sydney, then Sydney for Hollywood with a detour through Buenos Aires, and, finally, Hollywood for Paris.

There was really only way to mark the occasion of Michael Kors’s 40th anniversary: By getting together some of the original supermodels of the 1990s, of course.
The beloved American designer recruited Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen, Shalom Harlow and Carolyn Murphy to walk the runway in eye-catching shimmery gowns for his Fall/Winter 2021 collection The show, which celebrated the brand’s milestone, was recorded on location in New York City’s theatre district and streamed on April 20.

Television has been my surrogate social life for the past year, so all my style icons have been sourced via the small screen. Emily In Paris’s boss Sylvie gave excellent haughty French chic, at a time when I was watching fashion week on my laptop and pining for days ogling French Vogue editors across the catwalk. And Moira Rose from Schitt’s Creek is to the incoming roaring 20s what Daisy Buchanan was to the last time around, mark my words.
But the style icon I will be channelling in the low-key re-entry phase of real-world dressing is a woman who isn’t trying to dress up at all. In fact, I am sure she would hate being written about like this. I am trying to think of the bone-dry killer putdown Fran Lebowitz would fire back if I said to her face that, after watching her Netflix show Pretend It’s A City, I wanted to dress more like her. But obviously I can’t, which is why she’s Fran Lebowitz and I’m not.
