Investigative Reporting Seminar on Scrutinizing Electoral Campaign Spending in the Philippines The Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ) conducted the first leg of the seminar series supported by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) on January 21-24, 2016 at The Bayleaf Intramuros, Manila. Journalists from the National Capital Region and Luzon provinces attended the seminar. The seminar aimed at deepening the knowledge of the participants on investigative reporting and scrutinizing electoral campaign spending. It also aimed to grow the number of better-skilled auditors of good governance and democracy from both the demand and supply side of public information. California’s campaign finance watchdog will be investigating former Windsor Mayor Dominic Foppoli’s campaign spending.
The Fair Political Practices Commission wrote Foppoli this week saying its enforcement division “has commenced a commission-initiated investigation regarding your committee’s potential violations.” No conclusions have been reached but investigators informed the former Mayor that they may be contacting him to “discuss the matter.” It stems from an anonymous complaint filed in late April highlighting 10 instances of campaign spending and donations. They include a liquor bill for a 2019 Foppoli event, air travel, and payments to a former girlfriend and a campaign treasurer who works as an executive at his family’s Christopher Creek Winery.
For the judicial ballot, I look to the various Bar associations for a relatively unbiased recommendation process, which I follow in order to cast a more informed ballot. Where do I look for a roughly equivalent review of choices here?
The idea that CPS needs to have separate taxing ability from the city is always kind of nuts to me. I have never gotten a good explanation that I’m happy with as to why Illinois has so many independent taxing agencies. It seems like just a great way to hide graft and waste, and create opportunities for every random administrator to pay for pet projects.
